Archives For March 2014

We’ve got a light schedule on tap this weekend for the CV Products Trackside Program, with Martinsville Speedway in Virginia being the sole beneficiary. First up is the Kroger 250 Camping World Truck Series race on Saturday, followed by the STP 500 for the drivers in the Sprint Cup Series. The weather forecast for both days looks iffy. A cold front is expected to produce wet conditions, which is just fine for the folks who work in the NASCAR R&D Center. That’s because this weekend marks the unveiling of a new piece of track-drying technology aimed at getting drivers back onto the racetrack sooner when rain interrupts the action.

Kroger 250 - Practice

The new technology – the Air Titan 2.0 – is said to be a more compact, nimble and environmentally friendly version of its predecessor. The Titan 2.0 replaces those bulky support vehicles required by Air Titan 1.0 with a single, self-contained unit that’s perched on the bed of a support vehicle. By addressing the size of the power source, NASCAR says it now has the ability to deploy up to 21 drying units at larger venues and operate more efficiently on smaller tracks. That’s a good thing because they may very well need it this weekend in Martinsville!

Kroger 250

Series: NASCAR Camping World Truck Series
When: Saturday, March 29
Racetrack: Martinsville Speedway – Martinsville, VA
Where to find us: Trackside, and you’ll need to a Pit Pass to get where we are

What you need to know: Local driver Timothy Peters has built an impressive career in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series — one that includes seven victories and a top 10 points finish in each of the last six seasons. But, arguably, his greatest personal accomplishment was his Martinsville Speedway victory in 2009. This weekend, he hopes to duplicate the feat. Peters, who hails from nearby Danville, Va., hopes a new truck body will elevate his success on the Virginia short track. The 2014 truck body debuted at Daytona, and will make its first short-track start this weekend. Peters finished in fourth in this race last year, and if he were able to win on Saturday, he would become the sixth driver to record multiple wins at the track.

STP 500

Series: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
When: Sunday, March 30
Racetrack: Martinsville Speedway – Martinsville, VA
Where to find us: Trackside, but you’ll need to a Pit Pass to get there!

What you need to know: Kyle Busch led five laps last Sunday at Auto Club Speedway, bringing his career total to 9,938. He needs just 62 more to become the 15th driver in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series history to reach 10,000 career laps led. But five different drivers have won the first five races of the 2014 season. That happened last year, too. But what hasn’t happened in the 10-year history of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup – six different winners in the first six races. With this weekend’s wet weather conditions, don’t be surprised if that’s exactly what happens. And if the winner drives for Michael Waltrip Racing or Richard Childress Racing, it will also be six different winning teams in the first six races. And for the record, the record for most unique winners to start a season: 10 in 2000. Statistically, Johnson, Gordon and Hamlin look like the solid choices to extend the streak.

It’s awkward to be talking about “win-and-you’re-in” this early in the Spring Cup Series racing season, but with a bevy of different winners so far this year, that’s more than likely. NASCAR tells us that if there are more than 15 winners in the first 26 races, all bets are off – a race winner could be left out of the Chase. But that’s unlikely, say the experts. Last year, there were five different winners to start the season – and the regular season still ended with 13 different winners in the first 26 races.

Here’s where we’ll be for all the weekend’s action:

Series: NASCAR Nationwide Series
When: Saturday, March 22
Racetrack: Auto Club Speedway – Fontana, CA
How to watch from home: 4:30PM (EST) on ESPN, MRN and Sirius XM Ch. 90

What you need to know: In Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series TreatMyClot.com 300 at Auto Club Speedway, Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Elliott Sadler have the opportunity to reach double digits – that is, win Joe Gibbs Racing’s 10th consecutive race at Auto Club Speedway. With 10 total victories among the three national series, Busch reigns supreme in Fontana, especially in Nationwide where he’s racked up six wins. Putting all of that aside for a moment, heading into Fontana, only one point separates Regan Smith and second-place Trevor Bayne in the Nationwide standings. This time last year, Sam Hornish Jr. held a 22-point advantage over second-place Justin Allgaier. This season’s NASCAR Nationwide Series championship battle is already heating up!

What you need to know: Dale Earnhardt, Jr., will try to rebound from his first finish outside the top two (he finished 24th last weekend at Bristol). In 21 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at the 2-mile Auto Club Speedway, Junior’s best finish is a pair of 2nd-place showings. With the natural progression of his improvement over his last two trips to Auto Club, you may want to believe that Earnhardt’s due for a win. His Daytona win and the new Chase qualifying format where a win all but guarantees a driver a spot in the postseason has allowed him to race all out for the win every weekend. And just in case you’re wondering, Earnhardt did win the 1998 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Auto Club, so he knows what it takes to win at this particular track.

Mobile 200

Series: ARCA Racing Series
When: Saturday, March 22
Racetrack: Mobile International Speedway – Mobile, Al
Note: CV’s trailer is in the pits and available for people with pit passes only
What you need to know: The fastest week in Alabama got underway earlier this week with a day-long testing session for all ARCA teams on March 15, and culminates with the drop of the green flag of the ARCA Mobile 200 at 2:00 PM on Saturday March 22. The ARCA Series is one of the most versatile racing series in the world competing on superspeedways, short-tracks, road courses and dirt today. In just two years, ARCA’s Mobile 200 races have drawn fans from 22 states and Canada. Look for Justin Boston, Anderson Bowen and Grant Enfinger to battle it out for this year’s Mobile 200 title.

CV Products Trackside Program swings into high gear this weekend with a presence at five races at three different racetracks. Thunder Valley (a/k/a Bristol Motor Speedway) is where most of the attention will be, especially on Sunday. That’s when the Food City 500 will take NASCAR’s best drivers on 500-lap, 266.5-mile odyssey that never fails to produce exceptional results. Bristol’s steep banking, all-concrete surface, two pit roads and stadium-like seating give drivers and fans alike an experience that’s truly unique. Also on tap for us this weekend… the 62nd Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring and the Hardee’s Rattler 250.

What you need to know: Brad Keselowski has emerged victorious two of the last five NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at Bristol Motor Speedway (a/k/a Thunder Valley). Even if it doesn’t seem immediately apparent, a closer look at statistical history shows he’s an heir to this slice of success. It’s all about the No. 2 – plus a trio of top-rung drivers who through the years have combined to give Team Penske a total of 10 victories at the historic .533-mile oval. In other news, something – anything – has to go Kyle Busch’s way one of these weekends. The No. 18 has led two of the first three Cup Series races this season, eclipsed the 100 driver rating figure in all three, driven the fastest laps run in all three, and has one top-10 finish to show for it.

What you need to know: Vienna, West Virginia’s Cale Conley is slated to make his Nationwide series debut on Saturday in the No. 33 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet. The 21-year-old becomes the 37th driver to make his NNS debut at Bristol, joining notables such as David Pearson, Brett Bodine and Trevor Bayne. Ryan Blaney returns to the No. 22 Team for the first time since winning at Kentucky in that ride. Blaney, who has never finished outside the top 10 at Bristol in any series, has run only one NNS race since the win.

What you need to know: After a couple of weeks away from the track, the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East heads to Bristol for the PittLite 125, the third event of the young event. Daniel Suárez is seeking his third straight NASCAR K&N Pro Series East victory after winning the first two races of the season in February. He became just the second driver in series history to Continue reading

Two weeks removed from a rainy Daytona 500, NASCAR’s best drivers headed to the desert for one of the most anticipated races of the year – The Kobalt 400 at the ‘Diamond in the Desert,’ Las Vegas Motor Speedway. With no chance of rain whatsoever, this year’s running of the Kobalt and the Boyd Gaming 300 for the Nationwide boys, afforded drivers and their crews with no excuses (aside from that side of the equation that dictates ‘what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas’).

Our Trackside Program was also in South Carolina for the weekend’s Pro All Start Series’ South Carolina Clash 150. Here’s a breakdown of each race:

Series: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
When: Sunday, March 9
Where: Las Vegas Motor Speedway – Las Vegas, NV
CV Trackside: Access was restricted to drivers, crewmembers and anyone with a Pit Pass

What you need to know: Forty-eight drivers from the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series turned laps at Las Vegas Motor Speedway late last week to further build upon the 2014 intermediate-track rules package that was formalized late last year. Serving as the first official NASCAR test with the new 2014 rules package in place, the four-hour session allowed teams to prepare for Sunday’s Kobalt 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway – the series’ first visit to a 1.5-mile track in 2014 – and beyond. Fresh off his win at Phoenix International Raceway last Sunday, Kevin Harvick was at the top of the speed charts at the conclusion of the test session (the No. 4 Jimmy John’s Chevrolet logged a total of 42 laps with a top speed of 190.148 mph). But the winner was Brad Keselowski, who passed a gassed-out Dale Earnhardt, Jr. on the final lap of the race.

Series: NASCAR Nationwide Series
When: Saturday, March 8
Where: Las Vegas Motor Speedway – Las Vegas, NV
CV Trackside: Access was restricted to drivers, crewmembers and anyone with a Pit Pass

What you need to know: The last two NASCAR Nationwide Series races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway had seen series regulars celebrate in Victory Lane: Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (2012) and Sam Hornish Jr. (2013). Saturday’s Boyd Gaming 300 could have continued that streak with a handful of drivers as the most likely to pull the trifecta off. A quick scan of Loop Data from the past nine series races at Las Vegas have a combination of Trevor Bayne, Ty Dillon, Brendan Gaughan, Elliott Sadler and Brian Scott appearing in the top five in several categories: average driver rating, quality passes, green-flag speed, fastest laps run, fastest on restarts, laps led, laps in top 15 and average running position. In four starts at the “Diamond in the Desert,” Bayne has never finished lower than sixth. He led 21 laps in last year’s race before finishing fourth for the second consecutive season. His best finish at the 1.5-mile speedway is ninth (2012) in three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts. All of that said, Brad Keselowski, who led 144 of the race’s 400 laps, took the checkered flag.

South Carolina Clash 150 at Dillon Motor Speedway

Series: Pro All Stars Series
When: Saturday, March 8
Where: Dillon Motor Speedway – Dillon, South Carolina
Note: CV’s Trackside trailer was in the pit area (pit passes were required for access)

What you need to know: After a strong start to the 2014 season at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, the short track stars of the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) focused their attention on last Saturday night’s 9th Annual South Carolina Clash 150 at Dillon Motor Speedway. The PASS South Super Late Models and PASS Pro Late Models tackled Dillon’s tough egg-shaped lay out along with the Allison Legacy Cars, Legends, and Mini Stock Mayhem 2. The PASS South Super Late Models competed in two thrilling events at Dillon in 2013. Austin Theriault edged out Preston Peltier by .120 seconds for the closest finish in PASS South history in last year’s South Carolina Clash. And, in an October return trip for the series, Daniel Hemric charged to the front in the final 50 laps to win the Wildcat 150. Little wonder then that Hemric went to Victory Lane again this time around!
